What is Invisalign?

1

Not happy with your smile and want to change it? But the issue is, you dislike the thought of bulky wires and brackets? We understand that completely. Well good news, Invisalign clear aligner technology may be the perfect solution for you. Aligner technology straightens teeth while being virtually invisible and providing you with the luxury to remove the appliance at your own discretion. Invisalign uses aligner trays which are worn for two weeks each, as each tray is designed to shift your teeth a slight way further than the previous tray, towards your straighter smile.

How does Invisalign work?

The treatment consists of a series of discreet, removable aligner trays that are designed to perfectly fit your mouth. Firstly, Invisalign can fix a whole range of issues, generally from mild to moderate conditions, including overbites, underbites, crossbites, gaps between teeth, open bites and crowded teeth. In many cases, Invisalign cannot fix severe orthodontic issues and braces will be required; however, both treatments can also be paired in certain cases. The Invisalign process goes as follows: You will have an initial consultation at My Dental Care @ West End where our team will examine your mouth and make sure you are suitable for Invisalign. We will also ensure any outstanding dental treatments are completed prior to Invisalign. Once satisfied, we can begin your journey with 3D scans of your teeth and gums using the iTero Intraoral scanning system. These scans will be used to create a customised treatment plan, personalised to your smile. The plan will outline the key movements your smile will undertake to achieve your dream smile. The scans will be reviewed and sent to the Invisalign laboratory, where your custom aligners will be manufactured. Once we receive your aligners back at our dental clinic, you will be called back in. We will provide you with the first three aligners and ensure your aligners fit properly, show you how to handle your new aligners and answer any questions. You will now begin your journey and only have to visit every six weeks to receive your sequential aligners.

Benefits of choosing Invisalign treatment

There are many clear benefits to choosing Invisalign, such as:
  • Virtually invisible – Don’t worry about friends, work colleagues or clients noticing easily.
  • Removable – Eat, drink and brush easier.
  • Reduced pain – No wires or brackets.
  • Less orthodontic visits.
  • Clear timeline – Thanks to the iTero Intraoral Scanner.
  • Improved oral health – Easy cleaning; no brackets or wires in the way.

How to clean Invisalign aligners

It’s important to ensure you remove your Invisalign aligners for eating, drinking anything besides water and for brushing and flossing your teeth. Before reinserting make sure to rinse your aligners free and brush very gently with a spare soft-bristled toothbrush. Also, ensure you brush and floss your teeth and only ever reinsert your clean aligners into a fresh mouth, that is free of plaque and bad bacteria. It’s also of great importance to soak your aligners once per day in denture cleaning solutions or using Invisalign cleaning crystals. Please NEVER use toothpaste or coloured soaps to clean your aligners as it will discolour and leave a bad taste on your aligner. Also NEVER use warm or hot water to rinse your aligners as it warps the plastic.

How long does Invisalign take?

You must wear your aligners for 22 hours a day to achieve maximum efficiency and ensure treatment does not take any longer than is required. In general, Invisalign aligners will take around 12 months to complete. However, this will vary per patient, depending on the issue and severity. Many people will start seeing improvements within two to three months of beginning their Invisalign treatment.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Generally, Invisalign is less painful than traditional metal braces. The pain is usually only occurring fortnightly when you change aligners as your teeth need one to two days to adapt to the shift.

Do I need retainers after Invisalign?

Yes, once you complete your Invisalign treatment, you will be required to wear a retainer. This is important as Invisalign may move your teeth to more desired positions, however, post-treatment, your teeth will, unfortunately, want to return to original positions. This process can be stopped through the wearing of a retainer. The retainer should be worn for 22 hours a day for six months, however after this, you only have to wear the retainer overnight or even a few times a week.
