When selecting a mouthwash, it is important that you consider your particular oral health needs.
If you have ever browsed the oral hygiene aisle, you will know that there are countless mouthwashes to choose from. In fact, if you would like to incorporate a mouthwash into your oral hygiene routine and are trying to choose a new product, it can certainly feel overwhelming. A good starting point is to think about what exactly it is that you need. Would you like to freshen your breath? Do you suffer from dry mouth? Do you simply want to reduce the build-up of plaque between brushing? Read on for our top tips when it comes to choosing a mouthwash that works for you…
1. Keep bad breath at bay
If you are suffering from bad breath and are looking for a mouthwash to help resolve the issue, most mouthwashes will help as long as the problem is mild and/or temporary. If, for example, you have eaten a strong-smelling food and would like to mask the odour, any minty rinse should be effective.
It is important to understand, however, that mouthwashes do not resolve the cause of bad breath, a condition which is sometimes a sign of an underlying health problem. If you have noticed that your breath is persistently bad or that you have a bad taste in your mouth, it is advisable that you see your dentist. They will be able to identify the cause of the issue and recommend a treatment plan to improve your overall health.
2. Alleviate dry mouth
Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, can be caused by health conditions like diabetes, as well as certain medications. If you suffer from the condition, it is best to avoid any mouthwash that contains alcohol as these can worsen the issue. You might also consider discussing your concern with your dentist as they may recommend a mouthwash that is especially formulated for those with dry mouth.
3. Fight off gum disease
While there is no substitute for regular brushing and flossing when it comes to keeping your teeth clean, adding an antibacterial mouthwash to your routine may be helpful in keeping harmful bacteria under control. If your dentist has warned you that you are at particularly high risk of developing gum disease, they may prescribe an even stronger mouthwash that contains ingredients with the ability to destroy bacteria in your mouth.
4. Find relief from sensitivity
If you have sensitive teeth, you will know that it can be very uncomfortable, especially when eating and drinking. The good news is that there are mouthwashes available that can provide you with some relief. In fact, certain mouthwashes are formulated to numb and/or strengthen the teeth to help minimise the unpleasant symptoms of tooth sensitivity. Look out for ingredients such as fluoride, which help to strengthen the enamel of the teeth. It is also worth seeing your dentist to discuss your sensitivity — they may recommend a treatment that can help to alleviate your discomfort.
