The process of having veneers placed usually takes three appointments.
Dental veneers are an increasingly popular cosmetic treatment thanks to the range of benefits that they provide. Once applied, they blend in seamlessly with the natural teeth and achieve a very natural-looking aesthetic. They can be used to resolve a range of imperfections, from gaps and stains to misalignment and chips. But what does the treatment process involve? Read on to find out what to expect from dental veneer treatment, and why you might consider it…
How are they applied?
If you choose to go ahead with dental veneer treatment, you can expect to see your dentist about three times. First, you will need to schedule an initial consultation. During this consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and confirm whether you are a suitable candidate for veneers. If the treatment is appropriate for you, your dentist will create a plan for you by determining the size, shape and type of veneers that best suit your aesthetic goals.
At the second appointment, your dentist will prepare your teeth for your veneers by removing a small amount of enamel from each tooth. This will allow your veneers to sit as close as possible to your teeth and ensure that a natural-looking result is achieved. Once your teeth have been prepared, your dentist will place temporary veneers. Your permanent veneers will then be fabricated in a dental laboratory.
When your dental veneers are ready, you will see your dentist for the final appointment. At this time, your dentist will cement your veneers onto the surface of your teeth. They will check that you are happy with the fit and appearance of your new smile.
How do you take care of veneers?
To maintain the results of your cosmetic treatment and to keep your smile in good condition in the long term, it is important that you practice proper oral hygiene habits every day. This includes regular brushing and flossing, as well as dental check-ups every six months. With the right care, dental veneers can last up to ten years and proper maintenance can go a long way in extending their life span. Try to avoid particularly hard foods that can cause damage — chat to your dentist about any recommended dietary restrictions that can help to keep your veneers in good shape. It is also advisable that you don’t use your teeth to chew or bite on hard objects like ice, fingernails and pens; and never use your teeth to open packaging as this can cause damage to your veneers. If you notice that you grind your teeth or clench your jaw, be sure to discuss these issues with your dentist. These habits can cause wear and tear to your teeth, and your dentist may recommend that you wear a splint or retainer to protect your veneers from further damage.
